A sling is a surgically affixed "patch," of tissue of synthetic material, to control urinary incontinence by gently compressing the make urethra or by supporting the female urethra and bladder in a more anatomically correct position.

Post-op instructions:

  • Take it easy the first few days. Then resume normal activity.
  • Avoid lifting more than 20 pounds approximately six weeks.
  • Avoid strenuous activity (including housework, vacuuming, physical exercise, jogging, snow shoveling, yard work, and contact sports) approximately six weeks.
  • Avoid intercourse approximately six weeks.

Concerns that should be addressed at once:

  • Temperature greater than 101.5 degrees for more than 48 hours
  • Fluid draining from the incision
  • Redness, swelling or warmth of the incisional area
  • Severe pain that cannot be controlled with oral pain medication
