Testicular torsion is a twisting of the testicle around the spermatic cord, a result of the testicle not being firmly attached inside the scrotum, leading to strangulation of the blood supply to the testicle.

Symptoms in adults and older children:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Scrotal inflammation/redness
  • Severe testicular pain (one-sided)
  • Scrotal swelling

Symptoms innewborns:

  • Crying
  • Scrotal swelling and discoloration

Treatment modalities:

Surgery - untwisting of the testicle and probable affixation of each testicle to prevent future torsion

Testicular torsion must be corrected within six hours or the testicle will die.
