Although TherMatrx therapy is not a surgical procedure, the pre-operative preparation is similar. No general or spinal anesthesia is used. The therapy is administered in the doctor's office. TherMatrx therapy is relatively painless, and the patient can return home immediately following the procedure.
TherMatrx therapy is a microwave thermotherapy, whereby the application of heat to the prostate to reduce the symptoms of BPH patients. Microwave heat is delivered to the prostate via a small, flexible catheter passed through the urethra. The catheter contains a microwave antenna, which is attached to a microwave generator that produces the heat.
Because swelling will occur as a result of the microwave therapy, a catheter will be placed to drain urine. It will remain in place approximately one week.
Post-op instructions
Rest and avoid strenuous activity until your catheter has been removed.
Concerns that are normal:
- It will take six to 12 weeks for your prostate to heal completely, and for you to see noticeable improvement in your BPH symptoms.
- Blood in the urine and semen can be expected several weeks after the procedure.
Concerns that should be addressed at once:
- Discharge in urine or from rectum
- Foul-smelling urine
- Temperature 101.5 degrees or greater
