Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) w/biopsy printable instructions
A TRUS, accomplished with color-flow Doppler, is a procedure by which an image of the prostate is created through sound waves directed onto the prostate, via a probe inserted into the rectum, and viewed on a monitor. This exam is normally ordered, regardless of PSA results, if a digital rectal exam indicates the likelihood of cancer. A needle biopsy is done in conjunction with this exam to obtain a definitive diagnosis
TRUS is primarily used to:
- Guide the physician in biopsying the prostate
- Establish the volume of the prostate or PSA density.
