Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT)

A TURBT is the surgical removal/shaving of a tumor or tumors from the surface lining of the bladder via a rectoscope.

Pre-op instructions

Post-op instructions

  • Refrain from taking baths. Showers are permissible.
  • Avoid strenuous activity (including housework, vacuuming, physical exercise, jogging, snow shoveling, yard work, and contact sports) approximately six weeks.
  • Refrain from lifting over 20 pounds for at least a month.
  • Driving is permissible provided you are not on medication that will or might affect safety.

Concerns that are normal:

  • Pinkish or bloody urine with white flecks or small blood clots for about three weeks following surgery
  • Increased activity may also result in pinkish or bloody urine for a short time.

Concerns that should be addressed at once:

  • Temperature or 101.5 degrees or greater for more than 24 hours
  • Large blood clots in the urine
  • Dark red, wine-colored urine
  • Difficulty in urination
