Urinary tract infection (UTI)

Infection/inflammation of the urinary tract

The three types of urinary tract infections:

  • Cystitis:
    An UTI caused by bacterial infection of the bladder
  • Nonbacterial cystitis:
    An UTI caused by infection of the paraurethral glands located around the lower portion of the urethra. 
    Note:  A urine culture will not determine the presence of a bacterial infection in nonbacterial cystitis.
  • Pyelonephritis: Inflammation of the renal pelvis

Diagnosis:

  • Laboratory tests on urine will determine the diagnosis.
    These tests take two days.

Treatment pending diagnosis:

  • Consume large quantities of fluids
