Vascular surgery is the clinical and scientific discipline concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases affecting arteries, veins and lymphatics. A large proportion of vascular surgery is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of degenerative arterial diseases. Our department has five board certified vascular surgeons and two nurse practitioner on staff and their expertise spans the full spectrum of vascular surgery including (but not exclusive of):
Diseases of the Arterial System:
- Carotid Artery Disease
- Upper and Lower Extremity Arterial Stenosis (Claudication)
- Aneurysms of the Aorta and Other Arteries
- Renal Artery Stenosis
- Mesenteric Ischemia
- Arterial Emboli/Occlusion
- Vasculitis
- Pseudoaneurysms
Diseases of the Venous System:
- Varicose Veins
- Superficial and Deep Venous Thrombosis
- Venous Claudication
- Post Thrombotic Syndrome
- Chronic Venous Stasis
- Vena Cava Filter Placement
Other Vascular Treatments:
- Dialysis Access (for peritoneal and hemodialysis)
- Lymphedema
- Microvascular Disease (Raynand's, Buerger's disease, Blue toe syndrome, Acrocyanosis)

- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
- Arteriovenous Malformations
- Management of Acute and Chronic Vascular Wounds
They also offer a wide variety of surgical and endovascular treatment options utilizing cutting edge research and technology.
The surgeons and nurse practitioner see potential patients for evaluations and follow-up in the UNMC Physician's Heart Center located on the 2nd floor of the Durham Outpatient Care Center in the Atrium.
