and insights into education and research
Curriculum
Ph.D. Program
- Approach to elective courses.
The program lists the areas
from which elective courses can be chosen. The Curriculum Committee compiled
a list from various departments as to which 800/900 level courses are appropriate
for the degree.
- Supervisory Committee.
Each Ph.D. student must identify an
Advisor and have a Supervisory Committee in place by the end of their
first year. The Supervisory Committee is composed of the Advisor and four other faculty
members; three
of the five must be Center faculty with 4 holding graduate faculty appointments and at least one person must be from
an outside discipline.
- Areas of specialization.
The
option of designing an area of specialization is left to each student and
his/her advisory committee.
- Required courses. Required courses for Center graduate students
(M.S. and Ph.D.) include: Biostatistics I (PSM 806 at UNMC) or Statistical
Methods in Research (Biometry 801 at UNL), Biochemistry (BRTP 821/822 or
823/824 at UNMC or BIOC 831or 832 at UNL), Principles of Toxicology (TOX
888) and Advanced Toxicology (TOX 950) course.
- Dissertation.
Students are required to complete a dissertation
and oral defense.
- Comprehensive exam.
There will not be a written comprehensive
exam due to the variability of each participant's training. During their second or third year in the program, students
are expected to complete a grant proposal on a subject
related to toxicology, yet outside of their immediate area of research.
The proposal must conform to the guidelines of an appropriate federal agency
(NIH, EPA, USDA, etc.). After review by the Supervisory Committee and selected
outside reviewers, an oral defense of the grant proposal and related
subject material will be held.
- Publication.
All students must submit
an article for publication as a requirement for the Ph.D. degree.
- Internships.
Internships will be offered as an elective once
details are worked out. Protocols will need to be developed, contacts made
with prospective companies, opportunities assessed, and internships designed
that are of value to the student, company and toxicology program.
Masters of Science Program
- Requirements.
An M.S. degree in toxicology is offered
through the Center, including both options as currently listed in the university's
Graduate Studies Bulletin: Option 1: [Research (Ph.D.) track] minimum 30 hrs; 20-24
hrs course work and 6-10 hrs thesis; half of hours including thesis must
be in major. Option 2: [Non-research (non Ph.D.) track] minimum 36 hrs; minimum 18 hrs
major, or 2 minors of 9 hrs with 15 hr major, no thesis; 12 hrs must be
in exclusive upper level courses. All M.S. students must take the toxicology
core courses.
Track 1. Financial support is available to students
taking the Research (Ph.D.) track. Students do not have the option of changing
to option 2.
Track 2. The Non-research (non-Ph.D.) track must be declared upon
entry into the program. There is no financial support provided for
this option. Students may move up from this option to the Ph.D. track. Students should complete this program option in three years.
- Advisory Committee.
M.S. students must
identify an Advisor and have an Advisory Committee in place by the end of their first year.
The Advisory Committee is composed of the Advisor and two other faculty
members; two of the three must be both Center faculty and graduate college faculty, with at least one person from an outside discipline.
The Graduate Committee has final approval over the composition of all Advisory Committees.
- Required courses.
Required courses for Center graduate students
(M.S. and Ph.D.) include: Biostatistics I (PSM 806 at UNMC) or Statistical
Methods in Research (Biometry 801 at UNL), Biochemistry (BRTP 821/822 or BRTP
823/824 at UNMC or BIOC 831or 832 at UNL), Principles of Toxicology (TOX
888) and Advanced Toxicology (TOX 950) course.
