Dr. George Hemstreet is an active clinician, practicing in all areas of urology, while specializing in prostate and bladder cancer. He conducts weekly clinics and maintains a busy surgery schedule at UNMC. He is also on staff at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha.
His academic career involves the education of eight Urologic Surgery residents, and the introduction of Urologic Surgery to medical students.
Dr. Hemstreet is a dedicated researcher, internationally known for his work in molecular markers for prostate and bladder cancer risk assessment and detection via quantitative fluorescence image analysis. He is also recognized for his research in diabetes biomarkers. He has been the recipient of more than four dozen major research grants and awards. Many of these studies have been funded by the National Institutes of Health and are international in scope.
Dr. Hemstreet is a prolific journal contributor, and a much-requested speaker. He has authored more than 150 journal articles and book chapters, and frequently presents at both national and international urologic conferences.
Before coming to UNMC in early 2002, Dr. Hemstreet was the George Lynn Cross Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OHSC), Oklahoma City. He was also Residency Program Director for the Department of Urology at OHSC.
Dr. Hemstreet completed his undergraduate work at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Columbia University in New York. He received his medical education at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and fulfilled his Urology residency and postdoctoral work in Microbiology and Immunology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. |
