Prostate Biopsy Prep

Fourteen (14) days before your procedure:

Discontinue the use of all herbal supplements, vitamin E, garlic pills, and ginkgo biloba.

 

Ten (10) days before your procedure:

Discontinue the use of aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, and Nuprin

 

Seven (7) days before your procedure:

Discontinue the use of Pletal and Plavix after conferring with the prescribing physician.

 

Five (5) days before your procedure:

Discontinue the use of Coumadin, after conferring with the prescribing physician.

 

The day before your procedure:

Take one at bedtime:  ____Cipro tablet          ____Levaquin tablet

Use one Fleets enema at bedtime.  (Get Fleets enema at your local pharmacy.)

 

The day of your procedure:

            Have a light breakfast (example: toast or cereal and juice).

                        You may drink as many liquids as you like; liquids are not restricted.

                        Do not eat anything after breakfast.

            Take one with breakfast:         ____Cipro tablet          ____Levaquin tablet

            Use one Fleets enema approximately one hour prior to your procedure.

            Take one with your evening meal:      ____Cipro tablet          ____Levaquin tablet

 

The day after your procedure:

Take one with breakfast:         ____Cipro tablet          ____Levaquin tablet

POST-PROSTATE BIOPSY INSTRUCTIONS

 

Concerns that are normal following prostate biopsy:

  • A small amount of blood in the urine for up to two weeks 
  • A small amount of blood in stools for up to two weeks
  • A small amount of blood in semen for up to three months

 

Concerns that should be addressed at once:         

  • Temperature greater than 101 degrees
