We in the Asia Pacific Rim Development Program:

    • Continue to help UNMC (all colleges) develop reputation as a world-class institution and increase visibility/reputation
    • Establish a good relationship with future strong scientific/medical programs in Asia Pacific regions; promote friendships and cultural understanding
    • Grant cost savings to UNMC through financial aid awarded to incoming students, postdoctoral scholars through research and medical study/training
    • Increase research scope and efficiency
    • Provide successful collaborative exchange programs consisting of research and medical training opportunities for high quality students/faculties/postdoctoral scholars from UNMC & Asia/Pacific Rim
    • Meet need of improved Chinese medical care, higher quality health care workers, and better medical products for people of China

The key to successful economic growth in each nation is collaboration in research and education. After more than 25 years of academic exchanges with China and Japan, UNMC sought to expand these partnerships. Our partnerships in China are with: 1) Chinese Academy of Sciences; 2) Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; and 3) Xi'an Jiaotong University Health Science Center.

Forging partnerships with China not only advances scientific and economic growth; it also promotes friendship and cultural understanding.

Some of our programs include the following exchanges:

    • Medical Student Exchange: Chinese and UNMC medical students complete 3 months of clinical medical observations/rotations.
    • Nursing Student Exchange: Chinese and UNCM nursing students spend 1 month overseas for clinical observation.
    • China Scholarship Council program: Chinese graduate students may choose one of two models: attend UNMC for 12 to 24 months training or 4-5 years for a Ph.D. Postdoctoral Scholars attend UNMC for 12 to 24 months training.
    • Physician Scientist Graduate Training Program: In this 2+4+2 model, Chinese medical students finish 2 years of medical school, come to UNMC to receive a Ph.D., then return for final 2 years of medical school in China.
    • Faculty/Administrators Program: Chinese administrators receive 3-6 months of education and training in administrative methods and procedures at UNMC. In China, UNMC faculty members perform teaching and give seminar and lectures series at our Chinese university partners.
