Asia Pacific Rim Development Program (APRDP)

CSC & UNMC Agreement

From 2007-2011, the China Scholarship Council (CSC), under its “Program of Governmental Graduate Student Scholarship” (PGGSS), plans to provide financial support to students from the top 49 Chinese universities toward scientific training abroad.

China plans to provide financial support annually to 5,000 joint degree students (1-2 years) or degree-oriented graduate students (4-5 years) and 7,000 non degree-oriented students/postdoctoral scholars who partake in training at U.S. universities.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is among a growing list of carefully selected American universities that Chinese students can attend through this financial support from the CSC, a significant outcome of the established partnerships with SJTUSM, GUCAS, & XJTUHSC.

UNMC will help to accept joint-training students, degree-seeking graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars for scientific training each year until 2011. The program’s aim is to provide excellent training to Chinese students under the guide of outstanding research scientists at UNMC. This will allow us to develop international scientific exchanges with top rated Chinese universities, furthering our channels of collaboration with these potential scientific partners.

JOINT-TRAINING PROGRAM

This program supports students from a select group of 49 Chinese universities who seek a Ph.D. from their university by completing the required coursework in China, followed by 12 to 24 months of performing research projects supported by a Principal Investigator at UNMC. After this joint-training period, the students then return to their Chinese university for their thesis defense and degree award.

DEGREE SEEKING PROGRAM

This program supports students from a select group of 49 Chinese universities seeking a Ph.D. degree from UNMC, awarded by training and performing research projects supported by a Principal Investigator at UNMC for 4 to 5 years. These may be students who registered at their Chinese university during their last year of college, college graduates, or students with a Masters Degree who would like to pursue a Ph.D. offered by UNMC. These students typically will be admitted by UNMC as a regular Ph.D. graduate student and train in a program very similar to that of regular UNMC graduate students. The students who apply for this program should meet UNMC requirements and evaluation procedures and complete their Ph.D. studies for the degrees at UNMC upon matriculation.

POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS

This program supports newly graduated Ph.D. and/or M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) scientists who choose to pursue postdoctoral research training at UNMC. They will perform research projects supported by a Principal Investigator at UNMC for 1-2 years. These postdoctoral scholars need to contact their prospective supervisor at UNMC for their acceptance. The supervisor must provide an offer letter to the CSC, Chinese university, and qualified candidate, who then must apply to the CSC for final approval.

MD/PhD  (Physician Scientist Graduate Training Program or PSGTP)

During the past three years, UNMC has had more than 30 medical and nursing students and faculty exchanges with our collaborators at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Recently, a joint MD / PhD Program was developed, named "Physician Scientist Graduate Training Program" (PSGTP). The aim of the PSGTP is to nurture a select group of outstanding medical students who wish to receive more training in basic science and become future physician-scientists of China. It is an integrated program with training in both clinical medicine and scientific research between SJTUSM (MD) and UNMC (PhD). Currently, both universities are making great efforts to promote this dual-degree program, which is currently offered by only one other university in China. UNMC and SJTUSM are leading the way in the development this combined MD/PhD program. This joint program in medical and medical research education will help meet the need of improved Chinese medical care, higher quality health care workers, and better medical products for the people of China in this new century.
