Dr. Kari A. Simonsen has a strong track record of sustained leadership and interest in faculty development. She believes faculty are our most valuable resource for impacting the success of students and residents, and as such, we need to ensure faculty have an inclusive environment that supports their ongoing development, personal well-being and professional effectiveness.

A graduate of multiple leadership programs, Dr. Simonsen recently completed a Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program that offers an intensive one-year fellowship of leadership training with extensive coaching, networking and mentoring opportunities aimed at expanding the national pool of qualified women candidates for leadership in academic medicine, dentistry, and public health. Dr. Simonsen's ELAM institutional action project was on development, mentorship, and support of early career faculty.

A strong proponent of advancing women in academia, Dr. Simonsen currently serves as the UNMC Designated Institutional Liaison to the Group on Women in Medicine and Science for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Her role as the Director of UNMC's Office of Equity enables her to support avenues for the advancement of junior faculty, women and faculty from underrepresented groups.
