Join us on Monday, December 11 for a casual end-of-year drop-in at Corkscrew Wine & Cheese in the Blackstone District! We will have a space reserved for us in the middle section of the restaurant. No RSVP required. All are welcome.

Typically held over lunch, the Education and Sharing Series events are open to all UNMC and Nebraska Medicine faculty, students and employees. The group welcomes those from the LGBTQ+ community and allies, as well as other health care professionals wanting to learn more about health care issues in the LGBTQ+ community and diversity at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.
July 28, 2016 | Bisexuality and the Local Community
A guest speaker will discuss bisexuality and the local community. The majority of the event will be dedicated to a question-and-answer session. Following the session, the UNMC LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance Group will hold a short meeting. Learn more.

Nov. 30, 2016 | Best Practices for Educating LGBT+ Students
The majority of the event will be an open discussion of best practices when educating LGBTQ+ students in the classroom and clinic. LGBTQ+ Faculty and Allies are welcome to contribute to the discussion.
Jan. 27, 2017 | LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health
Dr. Joan Daughton from Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha will discuss LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health. Guests will have an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the presentation.
Aug. 11, 2017 | HRC and Healthcare Equality Index
Jim Kieffer, the Organizational Development Consultant for Employee Engagement at Nebraska Medicine, will be speaking to us about the Healthcare Equality Index. This is a national LGBTQ benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors, and employees.

Oct. 11, 2016 | National Coming Out Day Celebration
An informal drop-in for UNMC LGBTQ+ Faculty and Allies will be held off-campus at Cantina Laredo, Midtown Crossing. Each year on October 11th, the LGBTQ+ community commemorates the anniversary of one of the largest equality marches on Washington, D.C. by celebrating National Coming Out Day. It’s a day to celebrate the many positive possibilities of living life openly and authentically, with the support and celebration of friends, loved ones, and allies.

March 29, 2017 | Grand Rounds
Raymond C. Martins, MD, Senior Director of Clinical Education and Training at Whitman Walker Health, a federally qualified health center which serves a large LGBTQ population, will give a grand rounds presentation. In the spirit of community oriented primary care, his talk will focus on integration of primary care and public health in the context of a federally qualified health center serving LGBTQ populations in the District of Columbia. This event is brought to you by the College of Public Health as part of their Grand Rounds series.
April 3, 2017 | Special Event Featuring Dr. Loren A. Olson
Loren A. Olson, MD, is a well-respected, Iowa-based, board-certified psychiatrist. He is also a gay man who came out at age 40 and a nationally recognized expert on mature gay men. He has appeared on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America,” has spoken to groups across the country, and has given numerous national, local, and regional television, radio, and print interviews. He is a regular blogger for HuffingtonPost.com and Psychology Today. His latest book, FINALLY OUT: Letting Go of Living Straight, will be published in April 2017. The focus of the book includes challenging stereotypes of what it means to be old and gay and a new chapter on the opportunities of aging. Dr. Olson wants older gay/bisexual/questioning men to feel that there is life yet to be lived as an older gay man both in terms of finding meaning and also the possibility of finding new relationships.
Sept. 12, 2017 | Special Event — Early Responses to the US HIV Epidemic
Jason Coleman from UNO will be speaking on the topic of "Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals: Early Responses to the US HIV Epidemic." This event is jointly sponsored by the UNMC Pride Alliance and EMPOWER, two student led groups on campus.
Sept. 21, 2017 | Special Event — Author Book Reading by Dr. Loren Olson
Dr. Olson, a UNMC College of Medicine graduate, Class of 1968, reads from his book, Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight. Watch the book reading and informal conversation at the McGoogan Library.
Oct. 11, 2017 | Come Out for Cupcakes
The LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance invites you to help celebrate National Coming Out Day — with cupcakes! The significance of this day is to boost visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals. All UNMC and Nebraska Medicine staff are welcome to stop by for a cupcake — whether you identify as LGBTQ, as an ally, or just really like cupcakes. LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance group members will be in the commons area of the Durham Research Center II.
Oct. 13, 2017 | GenderWorks: Advancing Transgender Care in the Heartland — 2017 Conference
This conference is dedicated to providing medical and mental health care providers with education and training on how to competently serve transgender patients and clients. It will also provide training to educators and policymakers seeking to advance the right of transgender students and community members.
Oct. 24, 2017 | Stigma and Sexual Assault Talk
Dr. Jay Irwin, Associate Professor of Sociology at UNO, will discuss stigma and sexual assault against the LGBTQ community. This program is led by Medical ALLIES (formerly known as Pride Alliance).
