Join us for one of our Education and Sharing Series events featuring Director of UNO's Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, Jessi Hitchins, PhD, who will discuss methods that create a safe space for LGBTQ+ patients and employees.   Past Events

In addition to our Traditional Group Business Meetings, which occur on the first Monday of each month, we've also held the following events.

Education and Sharing Series  

Typically held over lunch, the Education and Sharing Series events are open to all UNMC and Nebraska Medicine faculty, students and employees. The group welcomes those from the LGBTQ+ community and allies, as well as other health care professionals wanting to learn more about health care issues in the LGBTQ+ community and diversity at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.

July 28, 2016  |  Bisexuality and the Local Community
A guest speaker will discuss bisexuality and the local community. The majority of the event will be dedicated to a question-and-answer session. Following the session, the UNMC LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance Group will hold a short meeting. Learn more.


Sept. 28, 2016  |  Transgender Health Issues
Guest speakers Dr. Jean Amoura (UNMC) and Dr. Jay Irwin (UNO) will talk about transgender health issues. Following the session, the UNMC LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance Group will hold a short meeting. Learn more.


Nov. 30, 2016  |  Best Practices for Educating LGBT+ Students
The majority of the event will be an open discussion of best practices when educating LGBTQ+ students in the classroom and clinic. LGBTQ+ Faculty and Allies are welcome to contribute to the discussion.


Jan. 27, 2017  |  LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health
Dr. Joan Daughton from Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha will discuss LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health. Guests will have an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the presentation.


Aug. 11, 2017  |  HRC and Healthcare Equality Index
Jim Kieffer, the Organizational Development Consultant for Employee Engagement at Nebraska Medicine, will be speaking to us about the Healthcare Equality Index. This is a national LGBTQ benchmarking tool that evaluates healthcare facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors, and employees.

Aug. 23, 2016  |  Get to Know Each Other Social
An informal drop-in for UNMC LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance will be held off-campus at Brix, Midtown Crossing. This is a chance to meet fellow faculty, staff and students, including subcommittee members of the LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance Group. 


Oct. 11, 2016  |  National Coming Out Day Celebration
An informal drop-in for UNMC LGBTQ+ Faculty and Allies will be held off-campus at Cantina Laredo, Midtown Crossing. Each year on October 11th, the LGBTQ+ community commemorates the anniversary of one of the largest equality marches on Washington, D.C. by celebrating National Coming Out Day. It’s a day to celebrate the many positive possibilities of living life openly and authentically, with the support and celebration of friends, loved ones, and allies.

Dec. 11, 2017  |  Holiday Mix & Mingle Drop-In Event
A casual end-of-year drop-in at Corkscrew Wine & Cheese in the Blackstone District. This is a chance to meet fellow faculty and staff members, including subcommittee members of the LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance.


April 17, 2018  |  Mix & Mingle
A casual get-together at Herbe Sainte, a New Orleans inspired cocktail bar in Aksarben Village. This is a chance to meet fellow faculty and staff members. All are welcome.


Aug. 25, 2018  |  LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance Picnic and BBQ
Our first ever LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance picnic and BBQ. Location is now Elmwood Park. We will provide hotdogs and drinks. Feel free to bring a side dish or games to share. Family and friends are welcome.


10.11.18  |  Come Out for Cupcakes: Celebrating National Coming Out Day
Help celebrate National Coming Out Day – with cupcakes! This day is significant because it helps boost the visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals and build community. Everyone is welcome to stop by for a cupcake – whether you identify as LGBTQ+, as an ally, or just really like cupcakes.


10.16.18  |  Queer Omaha Archives Tour
Learn more about local LGBTQ+ history during LGBT History Month. We will tour the Queer Omaha Archives with Amy Schindler, Director of Archives & Special Collections. The Queer Omaha Archives preserves Omaha's LGBTQIA+ history as part of the UNO Libraries' Archives & Special Collections. Historical materials documenting Omaha's diverse LGBTQIA+ communities are collected and made available to the public by archivists and librarians to more widely share Omaha's stories.


11.15.18  |  Mix & Mingle Drop-In Event
An informal happy hour event for UNMC/NM LGBTQ+ employees and allies will be held off-campus at Stirnella Bar & Kitchen (view happy hour menu). This is a chance to meet fellow employees, including subcommittee members of the LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance. Look for the table with the UNMC/NM sign.


12.15.18  |  Holiday Party
An informal holiday party for UNMC/NM LGBTQ+ employees and allies will be held off-campus at a private residence. Families and significant others are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided, along with holiday-themed games to play.

Other Events  

March 29, 2017  |  Grand Rounds Featuring Dr. Raymond C. Martins
Raymond C. Martins, MD, Senior Director of Clinical Education and Training at Whitman Walker Health, a federally qualified health center which serves a large LGBTQ population, will give a grand rounds presentation. In the spirit of community oriented primary care, his talk will focus on integration of primary care and public health in the context of a federally qualified health center serving LGBTQ populations in the District of Columbia. This event is brought to you by the College of Public Health as part of their Grand Rounds series. 


April 3, 2017  |  Special Event Featuring Dr. Loren A. Olson
Loren A. Olson, MD, is a well-respected, Iowa-based, board-certified psychiatrist. He is also a gay man who came out at age 40 and a nationally recognized expert on mature gay men. He has appeared on ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America,” has spoken to groups across the country, and has given numerous national, local, and regional television, radio, and print interviews. He is a regular blogger for HuffingtonPost.com and Psychology Today. His latest book, FINALLY OUT: Letting Go of Living Straight, will be published in April 2017. The focus of the book includes challenging stereotypes of what it means to be old and gay and a new chapter on the opportunities of aging. Dr. Olson wants older gay/bisexual/questioning men to feel that there is life yet to be lived as an older gay man both in terms of finding meaning and also the possibility of finding new relationships.


Sept. 12, 2017  |  Early Responses to the US HIV Epidemic
Jason Coleman from UNO will be speaking on the topic of "Rare Cancer Seen in 41 Homosexuals: Early Responses to the US HIV Epidemic." This event is jointly sponsored by the UNMC Pride Alliance and EMPOWER, two student led groups on campus.


Sept. 21, 2017  |  Author Book Reading by Dr. Loren Olson
Dr. Olson, a UNMC College of Medicine graduate, Class of 1968, reads from his book, Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight. Watch the book reading and informal conversation at the McGoogan Library.


Oct. 11, 2017  |  Come Out for Cupcakes
The LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance invites you to help celebrate National Coming Out Day — with cupcakes! The significance of this day is to boost visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals. All UNMC and Nebraska Medicine staff are welcome to stop by for a cupcake — whether you identify as LGBTQ, as an ally, or just really like cupcakes. LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance group members will be in the commons area of the Durham Research Center II.


Oct. 13, 2017  |  GenderWorks: Advancing Transgender Care in the Heartland — 2017 Conference
This conference is dedicated to providing medical and mental health care providers with education and training on how to competently serve transgender patients and clients. It will also provide training to educators and policymakers seeking to advance the right of transgender students and community members.


Oct. 24, 2017  |  Stigma and Sexual Assault Talk
Dr. Jay Irwin, Associate Professor of Sociology at UNO, will discuss stigma and sexual assault against the LGBTQ community. This program is led by Medical ALLIES (formerly known as Pride Alliance).


June 22, 2018  |  Schwartz Center Rounds: “Living an Authentic Life: Triumphs and Tribulations of LGBTQ+ Community and Allies”
The multidisciplinary forum enables clinical caregivers to discuss social and emotional issues that arise in caring for patients. Panelists include Ruth Marimo, Dr. Jean Amoura, Megan Smith-Sallans, and Evan Peavy. Read the UNMC Today story about the event.


June 30, 2018  |  Pride Festivities
The LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance is proud to represent at this year’s local Heartland Pride Parade and Heartland Pride Festival! All UNMC/Nebraska Medicine employees are welcome to participate; participants will also receive a free t-shirt. Read the UNMC Today story about the event.
