"The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves." — Steven Spielberg
Being a mentor is a rewarding experience that allows you to pass along your knowledge and experience to help others. In order to be a good mentor, you don't necessarily need to have experience in mentoring. It is your personal characteristics and experience that will help you guide your mentee toward reaching their goals.
The keys to a successful mentoring relationship include:
- Mutual respect and understanding
- Meeting on a regular schedule
- Establishing clear goals and expectations
- Measuring outcomes
- Keeping discussions confidential — with no feedback being given to supervisors or department chairs
