Joint Faculty Appointment at UNMC for NU (non-UNMC) Faculty


Appointment types available for joint appointments at UNMC:

1.)   Special Appointment (L1) – May have salary support or stipend with or without FTE.

2.)   Academic Administrative (M1 or N1) – May have salary support or stipend with or without FTE.

3.)   Courtesy (Title modifier “4”) - Unpaid Special appointment.

Current NU (UNO, UNL, UNK) Faculty Seeking Joint Appointment at UNMC (L1, M1, or N1)

Any current NU faculty seeking a joint appointment at UNMC should consult with their home department chair, and then reach out to the UNMC department to request an appointment.

1.)   FTE cannot be more than 49% at UNMC.

2.)   The UNMC department generates an employment agreement and appendix A.  https://www.unmc.edu/academicservices/forms/employment-agreements/index.html

3.)   The employment agreement should include signature blocks for the faculty member, UNMC chair, dean, and vice chancellor for academic affairs, as well as the relevant NU unit chair, dean, and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

4.)   A Personnel Action Form will be created by the UNMC department and sent to HR for routing to the appropriate NU Campus administrator for SAP entry.

New NU (UNO, UNL, UNK) Hires Seeking UNMC Joint Appointments (L1, M1, or N1):

1.)   Determine home campus (percent must be at least a 49/51 split - cannot be 50/50).

2.)   The UNMC unit creates a separate employment agreement or letter of offer and appendix A with signature blocks for the faculty member, UNMC chair, dean, and vice chancellor for academic affairs along with the relevant NU Campus chair, dean, and vice chancellor for academic affairs. https://www.unmc.edu/academicservices/forms/employment-agreements/index.html

The relevant NU unit creates their usual type of employment contract with signature blocks for the faculty member, relevant NU unit chair/dean, and vice chancellor for academic affairs as well as the UNMC unit chair/dean, and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

3.)   A new hire form is completed by the home campus unit and routed to the appropriate administrator for SAP entry.

Courtesy Appointments at UNMC (Title Modifier 4)

1.)   The NU faculty member requests an unpaid courtesy appointment at UNMC from their primary department chair.  If approved, the letter is forwarded with signature blocks for the UNMC department chair and dean to review along with the faculty’s current CV.

2.)   If approved by UNMC department chair and dean, a copy of the letter is sent to the appropriate NU off-campus administrator.  

3.)   A Personnel Action Form is created by the UNMC department and sent to HR for routing to the appropriate NU administrator for SAP entry.
