Osteoporosis and fractures are a major healthcare problem in postmenopausal women.

Menopausal women are often losing bone, but do not know it. Why?

Estrogen is a female hormone that protects your bones and keeps them strong and healthy. During menopause, the ovaries stop producing estrogen that may lead to a rapid loss of bone. It is common for women to lose up to 20% of their bone density in the first 5 years after menopause. Low bone density is called osteopenia and is considered a risk factor for developing osteoporosis.

The purpose of this study is to determine the best methods of treating postmenopausal women with osteopenia and prevent osteoporosis. This study will compare changes in bone strength (bone structure, formation, and bone mineral density) at the hip and spine over a period of 12 months. Women enrolled in this study will be randomly assigned to one of three groups:

  1. Optimal Calcium and Vitamin D supplements only.
  2. A commonly-used medication called “Risedronate” plus Calcium and Vitamin D supplements.
  3. A weight-bearing exercise program designed to stimulate and strengthen bones plus Calcium and Vitamin D supplements.
