About this Study

What was the purpose of the study?

This community-based randomized clinical trial compared the effectiveness of three (3) types of web-based interventions:  

  1. Interactive web-based only (WO)
  2. Interactive web-based supplemented with a peer-led discussion board (WD)
  3. Interactive web-based supplemented with professional email counseling (WE)

Across three (3) intervention phases of:

  1. Phase 1: Guided weight loss (Baseline to 6 months)
  2. Phase 2: Guided weight loss and weight maintenance (6-18 months)
  3. Phase 3: Self-managed weight maintenance (18-30 months).

The Primary Aim of the study was to achieve weight loss and weight maintenance, and the Secondary Aim was improving healthy eating and activity in a population of rural women, ages 40-69, who were overweight or obese (BMI 28-45 kg/m2), and who met eligibility criteria and provided informed consent at  baseline.
