Susanne (Scott) Hiland, a native of Tecumseh, Nebraska earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy in 1986 and her Master of Business Administration from Harding University in 2013.  Susanne proudly served as an enlisted member of the Nebraska Army National Guard during pharmacy school and upon graduation was commissioned in the U.S. Navy Reserve serving on active duty at Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida.  She joined Walmart in 1989 as a part-time pharmacist in San Antonio, Texas.

Over her more than 30 years with Walmart, Susanne has served in various roles including store operations leadership, regulatory and compliance, quality improvement and patient safety.  She led the teams that transformed Walmart’s quality assurance program, established Walmart’s Patient Safety Organization, pharmacist-provided immunizations, clinical pharmacist program, and accredited PGY1 Residencies, among other initiatives. Today as Sr. Director, Business Strategy she is responsible for Walmart’s component Patient Safety Organization, Safety Culture PSO.

Susanne is an active member in the pharmacy profession.  She is involved with the American Pharmacists Association, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and has served as Chair of the Policy Council of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. She has taught and mentored countless students through her work as a preceptor and has given back to several schools of Pharmacy through work on Dean’s Advisory Committees. Most recently, she was a founding member of the UNMC College of Pharmacy’s new Dean’s Advisory Council that was created in 2020. She was the founding Chair of the Walmart Women of Health and Wellness, was awarded the Sam Walton Hero Award and earned the distinction of Walmart Health and Wellness Associate of the Year. She was a finalist in 2019 for the Pharmacy Times – Parata Next Gen Pharmacist Lifetime Leadership Achievement Award.

The success of Susanne’s career could have been foretold while she was in school. As a pharmacy student at UNMC, Susanne was elected President of the UNMC Student Senate, and as such, served as a member of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents in 1985. At a time in the University's history of a challenging budget climate, the governor recommended closing the College of Pharmacy. Susanne led the fight to keep the College of Pharmacy open and thriving with both dignity and grace. (To her credit and that of students, faculty, alumni and community members, the College remained open).

Susanne has remained committed to supporting the College of Pharmacy and keeping a tight knit between herself and her classmates, a role they greatly appreciate and recognize as a very meaningful one.

She and her husband Jim live in Bentonville, Arkansas and enjoy the outdoors, especially biking, and time with their grandchildren, Levi 2 and Lucy 1.
