[MUSIC PLAYING] T.J. LOCKHART: The UNMC and Children's Nebraska collaboration is a unique aspect of our fellowship, in fact, that it allows both clinical and educational care to be done at two world-class institutions. 

BLAINE SCHLAWIN: We get a wide variety of cases that can include anything from complex neurosurgical cases to complex cardiac cases. But even from that spectrum, we also do out of the operating room sedation cases, both for imaging or orthopedics. And that, I think, provides really the full spectrum experience that we need. 

ERIN RENZE: Just the anatomy and physiology, it's so complex. It's a challenge every day. Every kid is different. Every lesion is different. It's amazing to just go through and just figure out how to take care of these patients and just it's so rewarding in the end. 

KAITLYN PELLEGRINO: We're at an institution that really values who you are as a person. So all the things that you enjoy doing outside of work, those things are also valued and we care about you as an individual, not just you as a fellow. 

T.J. LOCKHART: What I look for in a Fellow is someone who can find education components in really any case, that they can see that even the most mundane case is a way that they can figure out areas that they can improve their clinical abilities. 

KAITLYN PELLEGRINO: Teamwork is one of the most important things and one of the most critical things, both within our division, but also in pediatric anesthesia and a whole because when you're taking care of kids, there just is a different level of commitment to patient care, where it doesn't matter if it's the nurse or the surgeon or the anesthesiologist, we're all committed to taking care of that patient. So teamwork is integral to what we're looking for in a fellow and what we practice at Children's Nebraska and UNMC. 

MAIREEN MIRAVITE: We will push you in a lot of different ways, but we encourage you to continue to push yourself too. So I just want someone who's willing to jump in and join the cases, find the cases that you're interested in, and then make sure that you ask the questions that will help you understand every aspect of it so you can make yourself a great clinician. 

T.J. LOCKHART: What's unique is that everyone comes in and has different ways, different ideas, different traits that they bring into the process of training our Fellows and residents. The overall idea is that everyone is dedicated to learning. 

ERIN RENZE: At Children's, we have a great group of faculty. They are very engaged and excited to teach the Fellows. They come up and they make their own lectures that are just fantastic, and they'll share them with you. And they put their heart into giving these lectures that just give you this information that you'll remember for the rest of your life the way they presented. 

BLAINE SCHLAWIN: The Children's faculty and UNMC faculty are phenomenal. They truly care about us both as people and as their Fellow, whether that be in the operating room or even what's going on in our outside lives. And I think that's really what sold me on the program here, was how much they cared and how much they continued to care throughout our training. 

MAIREEN MIRAVITE: The best part about this city is how friendly everyone is and I do think that it has everything to offer. I feel like my life here is very easy and streamlined, and I have everything that I can possibly need. 

BLAINE SCHLAWIN: Time in Omaha is great. There's lots of different restaurants that I've tried. Probably gained too much weight here eating too much. I've really kind of made a home here outside of work and just really the outside scene in terms of hiking trails, biking, fishing in lakes. 

KAITLYN PELLEGRINO: Now is such an exciting time to be a pediatric anesthesia Fellow and decide to go into pediatric anesthesia. There is a lot of job security because we continue to do more and more complex types of cases on more and more complex patients, and we're going to need those people that have that specialization in the care of children to continue to grow the field. 

MAIREEN MIRAVITE: The reasons why I would recommend it for future Fellows would be the clinical depth of exposure, the community that we have to offer for trainees. We also have great backing from the university as well as research exposure if that's something that you're interested in. 

T.J. LOCKHART: I hope that our Fellows at the end of training really continue this quest for lifelong learning. I hope that they remain curious. I hope that they see that they are now going to be these independent consultants in the masters of care for pediatric anesthesiology. And whether you stay local, you move out to a different state or across the country, we want you to represent the University of Nebraska and Children's Nebraska in the best light.
