The division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology is dedicated to providing outstanding care to patients, education to peers, and leadership within the industry. With more than 800 patients seen annually, 69 cardiothoracic beds, and 21 dedicated CVICU beds run by our colleagues in the Critical Care Anesthesiology division, our cardiothoracic anesthesiologists are well-versed in the specialty.
UNMC’s heart transplant, lung transplant and LVAD programs are robust. Cardiothoracic anesthesiologists can expect to commonly perform Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), valve repair and replacement, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), MitraClips, WATCHMANs, adult congenital heart disease procedures, thoracic aortic procedures and more.
The division houses one of the only Perioperative Echocardiography Services (PECS) in the country, which is also recognized nationally for its echocardiography training program. PECS is comprised of several National Board of Echocardiography-certified anesthesiologists and a dedicated sonographer who perform more than 1,300 echocardiograms annually, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Investing in Future Leaders
The Department of Anesthesiology has offered an ACGME-accredited Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship since 2013 and currently accepts four fellows. Additionally, the division offers an echocardiography fellowship. Residents spend a total of 10 weeks rotating with the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology division, as well as four weeks in an echocardiography rotation. Medical students interested in anesthesiology have ample opportunities to shadow trainees and faculty in the division, as well as participate in projects and research.
Division faculty frequently lead and participate in regional, national and international educational activities. Many have earned leadership roles in organizations such as the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA), National Board of Echocardiography (NBE), National Academy of Perioperative Echocardiography (NAPE), American Board of Anesthesiologists (ABA), Times Up Healthcare, and more.
Additionally, multiple faculty execute passion projects in subjects such as global health, education, gender equity, physician wellness, and 3D printing for medical simulation.
