About Us

The University of Nebraska Medical Center's animal care program is administered through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

All facilities for housing animals are registered research facilities under the Animal Welfare Act and they are inspected regularly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

UNMC's program complies with:

  1. U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training
  2. U.S. Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
  3. The USDA implementing Regulations of the Animal Welfare Act
  4. The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

The Comparative Medicine staff and facilities are institutional members of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, and the Animal Care and Use Program has been fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care since 1966.
