The Summit started off with a whirl...literally. One of the presenters, Gail Stuart took a quicker trip than originally planned to Omaha spurred on by Hurricane Florence and then left the same day to hurry home and be nearby before Hurricane Florence hit her coastal home. (She arrived home safe and sound.)

The 2018 Psychiatric Nursing Workforce Summit included presentations on current and future workforce issues in Education, Practice and Policy, specifically impacting psychiatric nurses.  The 2018 Summit had more than 100 participants and featured Keynote Speaker Michael Rice, PhD, APRN, FAAN, a Nebraska native and former faculty member at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's College of Nursing. Dr. Rice spoke about building data-driven policy guidelines and his ideas for establishing an Agenda for National Psychiatric Mental Healthcare. Dr. Rice commented on the need for growth in the workforce during his presentation, "If you have the best evidence-based intervention in the world but there is nobody to deliver the intervention, what good is it?" Dr. Rice put the focus of his presentation on the need for training and expanding the workforce.

Other presenters included, Gail Stuart, PhD, RN FAAN, a nationally-known psychiatric nurse educator; Thomas P. Guck, PhD; Sheri Dawson, RN, the Director of the Division of Behavioral Health in Nebraska at the Department of Health and Human Services; Margaret P. Emerson, DNP, APRN, PMHMP-BC; Christine Chasek, PhD, LIMHP, LADE, LCP; Maggie Milner, BSN, MSW; and an Education and Practice Perspectives Panel on Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder with Mark Darby, MSN, APRN FNP-C; Tina Vest, MSN, APRN-NP; and Ken Zoucha, MD.

This year the Summit added community partners who were invited to set up tables in the foyer. The partners included Bryan Health, CHI Health Psychiatric Associates, Fremont Health, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs/Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System.
