Most of Nebraska is considered a shortage area for behavioral health providers of all types. Particularly hit by this are our rural areas.

Research indicates that this problem is furthered by difficulties with recruiting and retaining providers to our most isolated areas. The Rural Provider Support Network Conference is intended to develop support systems for providers in rural practice to increase our ability to retain providers in these most needed areas.

This fourth annual conference will provide information for rural mental health providers on a variety of relevant topics: play therapy as a means for addressing trauma in children; roles and responsibilities of the team when caring for those impacted by trauma; and postvention as prevention for suicide.

In the past, this conference has been offered in-person in the panhandle of Nebraska, but we have again adapted this year’s conference to accommodate social distancing and are offering it in an online GoToWebinar format.


Target Audience

This conference is intended for behavioral health providers across Nebraska, with a focus on providers (psychologists, LMHPs, PMHNPs, registered nurses, social workers and counselors) in rural areas of the state.


Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this conference, the participants should be better able to:

  1. Discuss how to approach behavioral health needs as a means for addressing trauma in children.
  2. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the team members involved in the care of those impacted by trauma and how each member can incorporate empirically supported theory into practice.
  3. Identify strategies to aid in suicide postvention as derived from case scenarios.

  • Describe the generational impact of suicide loss on mental health outcomes and support-seeking behavior.
  • Recognize the "postvention as prevention" model through the description of a Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Team implementation.
  • Evaluate the local and national utilization rates of a LOSS Team and how to properly implement the resource.

Suicide Postvention as Prevention

Presented by:
Ciara Warden, LISW

Ciara Warden is a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) in the State of Iowa and a member of the American Association of Suicidology. She attained her B.A. in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Kansas State University and her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kansas. Ciara has professional experience in mental health crisis response, inpatient psychiatric care, clinical mental health therapy, and post-secondary instruction and management. 

Currently, Ciara is employed at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the Grace Abbott School of Social Work, co-owns a private practice, and is attaining her PhD in Gerontology. At UNO, Ciara serves as a full-time faculty member and the MSW Program Coordinator. Ciara specializes in crisis issues, primarily suicide research, education, risk assessment, outreach, and grief and loss. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, especially her three little boys, who keep her very busy.

How Trauma and Historical Trauma Impact Development: Strategies for Working with Patients

  • Discuss how trauma and historical trauma impacts the brain during child development
  • Identify trauma-related behaviors and how the team's roles work together to ensure care is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable.
  • Describe the mechanisms involved in trauma-informed strategies and how the health care team can work at the top of their scope to improve patient outcomes.

How Trauma and Historical Trauma Impact Development: Strategies for Working with Patients

Presented by:
Tami DeCoteau, PhD

Dr. DeCoteau is a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) practitioner. TBRI is a therapeutic model that trains caregivers to provide effective support for at-risk children. She is also trained in various other trauma treatment modalities, including EMDR, somatic processing, attachment intervention, NMT (neurosequential model of therapeutics), and TF-CBT.

Dr. DeCoteau has extensive experience working with patients who suffer from complex trauma, neurodevelopmental disorders, grief, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thinking. Aside from clinical work, Dr. DeCoteau has given numerous lectures on how trauma impacts attachment and brain development, in-school strategies for working with traumatized children, and historical trauma. She is an enrolled member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation and a descendant of the Tutle Mountain Band of Chippewa.

Play Therapy 101: Welcome to the Play Room

  • Describe the functions of play therapy and how trauma, ADHD, anxiety, and attachment disruptions can threaten healthy play for children.
  • Identify developmentally appropriate play therapy toys and materials that can be incorporated into either a permanent or traveling playroom for the purposes of both assessment and treatment.
  • Articulate the roles and responsibilities of the team involved in basic play therapy skills, including structuring, tracking, a reflection of content and process, returning responsibility, facilitating self-advocacy, and limit setting.

Presented by
Kara Carnes-Holt, PhD

Dr. Carnes-Holt is an associate professor in the counseling program at the University of Wyoming. She is a professional counselor, a registered play therapist, and an approved play therapy supervisor (RPT-S). She is also the founder and director of the Rocky Mountain Center of Play Therapy Studies at the University of Wyoming.

Kara has special interests in utilizing humanistic play therapy, CPRT, and expressive arts interventions as they utilize the therapeutic relationship as the primary and foundational agent of change for children, adolescents, and their families. She has a personal and professional passion for supporting adoptive and foster families. Most importantly, Kara enjoys being with a perfectly imperfect family, random dance parties, and time away from ZOOM.

Continuing Education

In support of improving patient care, University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Nursing

The University of Nebraska Medical Center designates this activity for 3.0 ANCC contact hours.  Nurses should only claim credit for the actual time spent participating in the activity.

Psychology

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs. This activity has been approved for 3.0 credit hours of continuing education credit.

Social Work

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Nebraska Medical Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. University of Nebraska Medical Center maintains responsibility for this activity. Social workers completing this interactive live activity receive 3.0 continuing education credits.
