The Tropical Context

Module Description

This module introduces how the patient, pathogens, environment, and disease-carrying insect vectors interact to create risks for patients and their communities and present challenges for health care practitioners. What makes the tropics different? How are they similar to other settings? What lessons can we learn from these tropical diseases?

Module Objectives

Upon completion of this module, participants should be better able to:

  1. Describe tropical aspects of host, pathogen, environment, and vector interactions
  2. Characterize the role of food and water sources and security
  3. State relevant patient risks to counseling and anticipating complications in case management
  4. Identify non-communicable disease risks in the tropics and how to plan for them
  5. Delineate health systems differences between the U.S. and resource-limited tropical environments relevant to practice planning and travel counseling, with a focus on non-communicable disease risks (including conventional NCD, trauma, surgical services, and non-medical health services
  6. Integrate approaches to medical care delivery and health team functioning in the tropical environment to inform treatment decisions that respect patient and community values
