Facilities and Equipment

With a facility over 31,000 square feet, the Center for Healthy Living has the resources available for anyone to have a great workout and improve overall wellness. The center has a convenient and accessible location on the UNMC campus for students, faculty, staff, and community affiliates to stay active whenever it works for you. We want to be there for you on your fitness journey.

Two full-sized basketball courts which can also be used for volleyball, badminton, walking/running/rollerblading, table tennis, dodge ball, or pickleball. The courts also have a heavy bag in the southwest corner.

When scheduled classes aren't in session, members can use fitness classrooms for stretching/calisthenics or exercise using Fitness On Demand.

Members can secure their possessions during their workout or rent a locker for ongoing use. Showers are also available for use; towels can be picked up at the front desk.

Access

The center is accessible via the northwest entrance of the Student Life Center (SLC), which is secured by controlled access. You will need to have your UNMC/Nebraska Medicine ID badge to gain entry into the building. If you don't have an ID badge, please call the front desk at 402-559-5254.

The card reader is on the small pillar at the northwest entrance to the Student Life building.

Cardio and Strength Areas

Our cardio area features 44 cardio machines overlooking the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza, including:

  • Treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent bikes, stationary bikes, versa climber, Lateral steppers, a rowing machine, and stair steppers

The Thomas M. Heiser Strength & Fitness Facility features a variety of machines and equipment to help you increase your strength, including:

  • 17 weight stack machines
  • Free weight area including power racks with benches, cable equipment, smith Machine, dumbbells ranging from three to 150 lbs, and a power lifting platform
  • Stretching and abdominal stations

Indoor Track and Activity Courts

Our indoor walking track circles around both basketball courts; 12 laps is equivalent to one mile.

The two full-size basketball courts are equipped with machines and tools to aid in your workout, including stationary bikes, dumbbells, a heavy bag, and plyometric equipment (plyo boxes, jump ropes, etc.).

The courts can also be adapted for a variety of recreational games, including volleyball, badminton, pickleball, futsal and dodgeball.

Fitness Classrooms

Our multiple fitness classrooms are used for instructor-led classes. When scheduled classes aren't in session, members can use the rooms for individual use such as stretching, spinning, or engaging in one of 400+ classes available on the Fitness on Demand video streaming service.

Commons Area

In our commons area, you'll find a variety of equipment to assist in your workouts:

  • A clinical-quality, automated blood pressure machine. Members can use the monitor anytime while the facility is open.
  • Ping pong tables
  • Shuffleboard
  • Non-motorized treadmill
  • Rope trainer
  • Elliptical

Equipment for ping pong and shuffleboard can be checked out at the CFHL front desk by showing employee/student ID.

Outdoor Games

The CFHL has several outdoor yard games that are available to reserve and check out.

  • Kan Jam
  • Bocce' ball
  • Spikeball
  • Frisbees
