The Pediatric Research Office (PRO) provides infrastructure support to research activities of pediatric faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Children's Hospital & Medical Center (CHMC), giving pediatric patients the opportunity to participate and receive the latest in treatment options while adhering to the highest ethical standards in research.
The NPCTU takes advantage of the existing training and resources of the PRO to advance the mission of the IDeA States Pediatric Network. This includes the development of research-trained study coordinators and research-focused administrative staff who support research at both sites specific to pediatrics. Both campuses have designated research staff in the pharmacy and laboratory who work directly with study staff to coordinate clinical trials.
The PRO currently supports more than 200 pediatric research trials, comprised of a blend of federally-funded, pharmaceutical and investigator-initiated studies. Support ranges from regulatory assistance to full study coordination and can include administrative support and technical guidance. The number of studies supported by the PRO has steadily increased since its inception in 2007, including an increase in investigator-initiated projects (Figure 1). This highlights the growth in pediatric research at CHMC and UNMC and the potential for the NPCTU to make significant contributions to the IDeA States Pediatric Network as both a clinical trials site and an initiator of multi-center studies.
