The annual meeting of the AADS for 2000 will be held in Washington, DC April 1-5. Dr. Tom Berry, Chair of the Operative Dentistry Section will welcome our members and guests.
The Operative Dentistry Section Executive Council will meet on Sunday April 1, 2000 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. All interested Section members are invited to attend.
The Operative Dentistry Section sponsored symposium will be Sunday April 2, 2000 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. This symposium is titled "Initial Competency, Continued Competency and Licensure". Dr. John Reinhardt is our Section's program chair for this timely subject which should be extremely valuable to all members of the AADS. A description and schedule of the program is in this newsletter. The Section's business meeting will immediately follow the program. All members are urged to attend the presentation and remain for the business meeting. Following the business meeting, a CODE open forum will be held. See information in the CODE Report in this newsletter.
On behalf of the Executive Council of the Operative Dentistry Section I would like to extend warm greetings to all Section members. As we prepare for the 2000 Annual Session in Washington, DC I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Section officers, members of the Council and our Councilor for their dedication and support of the Section and it's goals. It has been a pleasure working with this group of highly talented individuals these past several years. Our Section has been active in a national project co-sponsored by the Academy of Operative Dentistry. The project is in its third year and is involved with the development of "Recommendations for the Clinical Practice of Operative Dentistry". A Task force was formed composed of dental educators and clinicians representing all regions of the country. We can look forward to their report in the years ahead.
CODE was restructured over a year ago as a formal arm of the Operative Dentistry Section of AADS. Dr. Larry Haisch has completed a strong year as National Director of CODE. With his leadership and the help of the Regional Directors they will strengthen CODE and provide continuity in it's National Agenda to assist in achieving better communication among teachers of Operative Dentistry.
Our section sponsored Symposium is the result of hard work of Calvin Lau and John Reinhardt and promises to be exciting opportunity to strengthen our understanding of competency in dental education. Please plan to attend and support your Section's Symposium.
A special thanks is in order to the Academy of Operative Dentistry for its continued financial support of our Section. We are very grateful and appreciative of this opportunity to work toward our common objectives.
Finally, we are interested in your ideas for national or section projects and your suggestions or thoughts regarding the section business. Please join us at the Business Meeting of the Section immediately following the Symposium and make your contribution to the success of the Section.
I hope to see you all in Washington DC.
Tom Berry
Chair, Operative Dentistry Section
Each year the membership of the Operative Dentistry Section must elect two members to fill vacancies on the Executive Council of the Section and one member to serve as Secretary of the Section. The Executive Council of the Section welcomes nominations from the membership to stand for election to these positions.
All nominees must be a member of the Operative Dentistry Section and those seeking the position of Secretary should have been a member of the Executive Council (although this is not essential). If you or someone you know is interested in either of these positions, please submit your/their name to the Chair of the Nominations Committee (Dr. John Reinhardt) at the meeting in Washington DC. Nominations from the floor during the Operative Dentistry Section meeting will also be accepted.
Also, the position of Councilor may become vacant in March 2003. Last year we established the position of "Councilor-elect". Henry St. Germain was elected to this position to fill a three-year term. However, if you are interested in this position in the future or would like to know more, please see one of the Officers during the meeting or contact Craig Passon (contact information in the Newsletter). Thanks for your interest in the Section.
A Symposium Sponsored by the Operative Dentistry Section
Sunday, April 2, 2000 3:30 to 5:30 p. m.
From the idea of Calvin Lau and through the hard work of he and John Reinhardt, our section will be sponsoring a symposium at this year's AADS meeting. Our symposium was one of only four selected for inclusion into this year's program from many that were submitted. Well done Calvin and John! The symposium is our section's program so please plan to attend. The section's business meeting will follow.
"How does dentistry assure the initial and continued competency of dentists? Will external forces demand more from licensure than the current system requires? This symposium explores the current status of competency and licensure issues and provides a glimpse into their future with representatives from education, AADE (dental examiners), ADA, and the Pew Commission on the Health Professions. Individual presentations followed by a panel discussion and an audience question and answer session highlight this program."
Presenters:
Education: Paul Glassman, AEGD Director/Consultant, University of the Pacific/ ADA Comission on Dental Accreditation.
Examiners: Edward Carlson, Chair Continued Competency Committee, American Association of Dental Examiners.
Dentists: Richard Mascola, President, American Dental Assosiation.
Overview: Catherine Dower, Health Law and Policy Analyst, Center for the Health Professions/Pew.
CODE continues to be an invaluable resource for the sharing of information discussing concerns and solutions by Operative Dentistry educators. The collegial interaction and networking which takes place can only continue to improve the teaching of Operative Dentistry.
As charged by the Executive Council of the Operative Section of the AADS, the National Director attended the fall meetings of Regions II, III, and IV. The other regional meetings will be attended in the next two years. My observation of those meetings reconfirmed my comments made earlier
Utilizing electronic media for communication (e-mail) and information (Web site), has been accomplished, but at a basic level. The fall 1999 CODE regional reports will be placed on the Web Site for the first time. In this manner more of our colleagues should be able to access the information. Each person needs to advise his or her administration of CODE and what it accomplishes. Remember we are all part of the profession of dentistry. Communication is necessary not only within our organization, but also with other dental organizations including many academies and associations.
CODE is to be or will be based on the desires of the membership. The CODE Advisory Committee needs to hear from you as to future direction. A CODE open forum is scheduled for Sunday, April 2, 2000 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. following the Section's business meeting. If you are unable to attend send you suggestions to your regional director and me.
Thank you to the 1999 CODE Fall Regional meeting coordinators for all their efforts on behalf of CODE. Drs. James Simon (Region I), Pat Kelsey (Region II), William Tate (Region III), Robert Rashid (Region IV), Richard Lichtenthal (Region V), and Jim Knight (Region VI). Regions II, III, and VI had 100% dues payment. Region I had a dues payment of, 89%; Region IV, 82%; and Region V, 70%.
Thank you to the Regional Directors for the work accomplished in their respective regions, and the assistance provided the National Director.
Larry Haisch
National Director of CODE
Many of the Sections of the AADS publishes a web site, we are one of them. The intent of the web site is to serve as a communication tool for the members of this section. Look for information regarding section activities and general information. This year, information about CODE was posted. Items such as Region information, CODE meeting information, membership, leadership information, etc. is available online. This site is dynamic and growing. Ideas for useful information to be posted are always welcome. Links to other Operative Dentistry Web Sites is one idea for improving our site.
The AADS maintains a web site for the organization at http://www.aads.jhu.edu. At this site links to the Section's web sites can be found. At the present time the Operative Dentist Section web site is not at this location. However, it will be moved there very soon. When it moves you will be directed to the new address from the current site. So, until the move is made visit our site at http://www.uchsc.edu/sd/rstdenti/OpDSect/odshp.html
Craig Passon
Councilor, Operative Dentistry Section
At our Section meeting three years ago the membership of our Section, with the support of the Executive Council, agreed to join forces with the Academy of Operative Dentistry (AOD) to undertake a national project beneficial to operative dentistry educators and practitioners alike. The Special Projects Committee of the AOD, chaired by Pete Triolo with members Tom Berry, Murray Bouschlicher, Richard Kloehn, Richard McCoy, Bill Morris, Craig Passon, Jim Summitt, Ed Swift, and Nairn Wilson have been working hard on the project titled "Recommendations for Clinical Practice in Operative Dentistry". After getting the official start in May 1997 the committee met several times and met again at the AOD Annual Meeting in Chicago this February. Between meetings they made extensive use of e-mail for communication.
At the recent meeting in Chicago a draft of the framework for Clinical Recommendations was presented and discussed using fissure caries as a test problem. If the structure proves successful a series of documents outlining various treatment recommendations for clinical practice will be compiled. The committee chair, Pete Triolo, may make a report of the progress of the committee to date and plans for the next steps if he is able to attend the meeting. The report will be made at the Section's Annual Business Meeting to be held Sunday, April 2, 2000 form 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the AADS meeting in Washington DC. Please plan to attend this meeting.
The work of the committee is funded by a significant grant from the AOD and a financial commitment of $500.00 per year for two years from the Operative Dentistry Section of the AADS.
