Alumni Awards

UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Association (CODAA)

The 2016 alumni reunion, sponsored by the CODAA, was an opportunity to celebrate long-standing friendships as well as to honor alumni, faculty and friends who have provided distinguished service to the college and the dental profession. We recognized the following individuals at the reunion’s banquet and awards presentation.

  

Ms. Gwen Hlava

Alumni Achievement Award

Gwen L. Hlava, R.D.H., M.S.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene form the College of Dentistry in 1972, she got her master’s degree in dental hygiene in 1975 from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry. She began her teaching career at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. In 1976 Ms. Hlava returned to Lincoln and recently completed her 40th year at the UNMC College of Dentistry, including 30 years as chair for the Department of Dental Hygiene.

Dr. Merlyn Vogt


Distinguished Service Award

Merlyn W. Vogt, D.D.S.

A native of Bancroft, Neb., Dr. Vogt graduated in 1983 from the UNMC College of Dentistry. After graduation, he practiced general dentistry in Henderson, Neb., from 1983 to 1994. He was a postgraduate endodontic resident at UNMC from 1994-1996 and practiced endodontics in Lincoln through 2005. Dr. Vogt became a full-time faculty member in 2006. In 2011, he took on the role of assistant dean for student affairs and director of admissions.

Dean Guthmiller

Honorary Life Membership Award

Dean Janet M. Guthmiller, D.D.S., Ph.D.

Prior to her appointment as dean for the College of Dentistry in 2014, Dr. Guthmiller served as the associate dean for academic affairs and a professor in the Department of Periodontology at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. She also served on the faculty at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. She has mentored more than 40 students and is a dipomate of the American Board of Periodontoogly, a fellow in the International College of Dentists, and a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.

Dr. Myron Pudwill

Outstanding Teaching Award

Julie A. Marshall, D.D.S.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from the UNMC College of Dentistry in 1981, Dr. Marshall received her doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch in Houston in 1987. She completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Administration Nebraska – Western Iowa Health Care System in 1988. Dr. Marshall received a specialty certificate in prosthodontics from the college in 1995 and her master’s degree in oral biology in 1996. Currently, she is an associate professor and interim chair of the Department of Adult Restorative Dentistry.

Award Nominations
Do you know alumni or others who deserve recognition for their outstanding contributions and/or service to the College of Dentistry, CODAA, or their communities? Nominate them for one of the following CODAA Awards.

Alumni Achievement Award
Presented to College of Dentistry alumni with a record of outstanding achievements in their dental or dental hygiene careers and/or civic involvement. Voting members of the CODAA are not eligible for this award during their tenure as a Board member.

Distinguished Service Award
Presented to College of Dentistry alumni on the basis of their contributions and/or service to the CODAA or the College of Dentistry. Voting members of the CODAA are not eligible for this award during their tenure as a Board member.

Honorary Life Membership Award
Presented to someone who demonstrates or has demonstrated exceptional service to the UNMC College of Dentistry or the CODAA. The recipient need not be a graduate of the College of Dentistry.

Outstanding Educator Award
Presented to someone who demonstrates or has demonstrated exceptional service as a full-time or part-time faculty member of the College of Dentistry. The recipient need not be a graduate of the College of Dentistry. This award can be made to a previous recipient, but there must be a ten-year interval between those awards.


Nomination Process
To nominate a person for any of these awards, please send a short (one typed page or less) description of the person's achievements, service activities or other contributions which make them eligible for receiving the award. Include your (nominator's) name and contact information. Nominations are accepted continuously and the CODAA Board of Directors selects award winners annually.
