Alumni Awards

UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Association (CODAA)

The 2017 Alumni Reunion, sponsored by the CODAA, was an opportunity to celebrate long-standing friendships as well as to honor alumni, faculty and friends who have provided distinguished service to the college and the dental profession. We recognized the following individuals at the reunion’s banquet and awards presentation.


Dr. Morrison

Alumni Achievement Award

Scott L. Morrison, D.D.S., M.S.

In 1985, Dr. Scott Morrison received his dental degree from the UNMC College of Dentistry. The following year he completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha. In 1989, Dr. Morrison received a certificate of specialty in periodontology from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, along with a master’s degree in oral biology. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Dentistry, UNMC College of Dentistry, and UNMC General Practice Residency Program.

Dr. Jurgens

Distinguished Service Award

Roger E. Jurgens, D.D.S., M.S.

Raised in the area of Kearney, Neb., Dr. Roger Jurgens attended Kearney State College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts. In 1964, he received his dental degree from the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry. Dr. Jurgens practiced general dentistry in Kearney and later returned to the College of Dentistry for a residency in orthodontics. He then practiced in Lincoln and taught part time in the College of Dentistry’s Department of Orthodontics. In 1981, Dr. Jurgens moved to Longmont, Colo., where he continued to practice until retirement.

Dr. Wallen

Honorary Life Membership Award

Jillian A. Wallen, B.D.S., M.S.

In 2000, Dr. Jill Wallen graduated from the University of Glasgow Dental Hospital and School in Glasgow, Scotland. She soon completed her post-graduate specialty training in pediatric dentistry and master’s degree in 2002 at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Wallen has held faculty positions at the University of Colorado, Denver Children’s Hospital, and the University of Maryland School of Dentistry before joining the UNMC in 2011.

Dr. Crouch

Outstanding Educator Award

Larry D. Crouch, Ph.D.

Growing up in the small, rural community of Ansley, Neb., Dr. Larry Crouch first experienced the satisfaction of helping others learn while in high school serving as a teaching assistant in physical education. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology education from UNL, master’s degree in medical sciences from UNMC, and doctoral degree in medical physiology from the LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans. Following fellowship training at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Dr. Crouch returned to Nebraska in December 1997 to begin his appointment at the UNMC College of Dentistry.

Award Nominations
Do you know alumni or others who deserve recognition for their outstanding contributions and/or service to the College of Dentistry, CODAA, or their communities? Nominate them for one of the following CODAA Awards.

Alumni Achievement Award
The Alumni Achievement Award is given on the basis of outstanding achievements in the dental or dental hygiene careers and/or civic involvement. 

Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is given each year to someone on the basis of their contribution to the UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Association and the contributions they made to the dental profession. 

Honorary Life Membership Award
The Honorary Life Membership Alumni Award is given each year to someone who is not a dental alumnus but who has demonstrated a dedication to, and support for, the UNMC College of Dentistry. 

Outstanding Educator Award
The Outstanding Educator Award is given each year to someone because of their accomplishments in the dental profession and their sincere dedication to dental education.

Nomination Process
To nominate a person for any of these awards, please send a short (one typed page or less) description of the person's achievements, service activities or other contributions which make them eligible for receiving the award. Include your (nominator's) name and contact information. Nominations are accepted continuously and the CODAA Board of Directors selects award winners annually.
