Dr. Borcher is a graduate from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Prior to working for NeHII, Kevin worked at the Nebraska Methodist Health System as the Pharmacy Informatics Coordinator for over 19 years.
Kevin served ten years on the Nebraska Board of Pharmacy and chaired or participated in several committees and task forces for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. He is also a member of the Nebraska Board of Health, Nebraska Medicaid DUR Board, and Nebraska eHealth Council. Kevin is a member of the PMIX Executive Committee and is chair of the PMIX Operations Committee. He is also co-chair of the NASCSA Data Integrity Subcommittee and the SHIEC (Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative) PDMP Workgroup and serves on a number of committees for national organizations supporting Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs across the country.

Prescription Drug Monitoring Program and Contemporary Pain Management - Meets LB931 for Licensure
Course Description: The opioid crisis continues to be a focus of federal policy and legislation. The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) is a valuable tool to aid dentists and other practitioners with identifying and monitoring patients who may be misusing or abusing opioids or other controlled substances. This course will provide evidence based guidelines for the management of dental pain, emphasizing non-opioid alternatives.
Course Objectives:
- Provide an overview of the prescription drug overdose problem across the country and in Nebraska
- Discuss state and federal policy and legislation
- Explain the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) (0.5 hour)
- Demonstrate the use of the Nebraska PDMP and its benefits within dental practice
- Understand recent studies comparing pain relief with opioid analgesics versus OTC meds
- Note that many patients first exposure to opioids is following a dental procedure
- Define multimodal pain management
- Appreciate the number of prescription pills actually used by the typical patient
- Realize the risks of drug diversion from unused prescriptions
- Discuss new local anesthesia options lasting ~ 48 hours, and how this service may be reimbursable from some insurance policies
- Explain how to recognize and treat narcotic overdoses
- Differentiate the pathophysiology and management of acute versus chronic pain
- Recall all drugs, even over the counter agents, have dangerous side effects
