Update on Moderate Procedural Sedation
This 6-hour course with a hands on component meets the educational requirements for maintaining a minimal, moderate, or deep sedation permit for the State of Nebraska. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
- describe the indications for sedation in dentistry
- describe why in some patients local anesthesia alone yields unsatisfactory outcomes
- give relative and absolute contraindications for the various drugs employed by dentists for sedation
- understand the key difference between sedating the adult versus pediatric patient
- describe contemporary definitions for minimal, moderate, deep sedation, as well as general anesthesia
- know the reversal agents available for commonly employed oral sedatives, and give appropriate doses
- Understand pertinent sedation rules in Nebraska
- understand the rationale for advanced monitoring including the use of pulse oximetry, precordial stethoscopes, capnography and EKG’s
- describe proper record keeping during sedation
- appreciate the causes for morbidity and mortality following anesthetic mishaps in the dental office
- practice using various airway adjuncts, and review surgical airways
- explain the informed consent process relative to sedation
- understand what a quantitative objective discharge criteria entails (Aldrete score)
- appreciate the advantages of bag valve mask ventilation relative to the patient in respiratory distress, and practice its use on a mannequin
- describe typical adult and pediatric drug dosages for the commonly employed sedative and emergency drugs
