Back to the Basics: Anatomical Considerations in Dentistry
Course Description:
This course is for dentists, hygienists, and assistants who wish to review the anatomical basis of dental practice. The first segment of the session will review the key osteology of the cranium, the musculature/neurovasculature of the face and associated structures, and highlight crucial fascial spaces important for predicting the likely spread of dental infection/metastasis. Next, we will revisit the TMJ, Infratemporal fossa, and Trigeminal nerve using a clinically-focused approach including use of simulation manikins for dental injections. Finally, participants will review the cranial nerves and clinically assess the integrity of each using an interactive living anatomy approach.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, attendees will better understand:
- Basic anatomical considerations of the head and neck
- Detailed anatomy of the face, TMJ, Infratemporal fossa, and cranial nerves
- Key osteological landmarks for dental injections
- Anatomical pathways of the spread of dental infection and cancer metastasis
- Clinical testing of cranial nerve function
Method of teaching: Lecture/discussion
