Residency at Offutt Air Force Base

The Family Medicine Residency at Offutt Air Force Base began in July, 1982 as a joint program with Creighton University. The original purpose of the program was to train experienced Air Force physicians from the field, who entered the program as second-year (PGY-2) residents. When the Family Medicine Residency program at Carswell AFB closed in 1992, the Offutt AFB residency expanded to a full three-year program. At the same time, the program became affiliated with the University of Nebraska Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program, where our combined training remains today.

The Air Force arm of the residency is a 3-year program with 8 residents per training year. Graduates can be assigned anywhere there is an Air Force base, from Japan to Italy and everywhere in between. You may also apply to go directly into flight medicine upon graduation. Some highlights of the training include: 

• Inpatient work in university, suburban, and rural hospital settings
• Wide variety of outpatient specialty rotations
• Dedicated 2 month rural rotation in small Nebraska towns 
• Robust sports medicine program supporting Division 1 NCAA sporting events
• Excellent procedural availability for colonoscopy, obstetrics, vasectomies, colposcopies, IUDs, endometrial biopsy, minor skin procedures, office obstetrical ultrasound, and much more
• An empanelment of patients cared for at the Air Force clinic
• Unique military training experiences such as the Tactical Combat Casualty Care
