There are a variety of funding opportunities for international students.

American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship  

The American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship encourages proposals from all basic science disciplines, bioengineering or biotechnology, public health, behavioral, epidemiological and community and clinical investigations broadly related to cardiovascular and stroke problems.

American Association of University Women - International Fellowships  

The American Association of University Women International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research to women who are not U.S citizens or permanent residents. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls.

Association for Institutional Research  

Association for Institutional Research (AIR) offers a Fellowship Program in Institutional Research.

Autism Speaks  

Autism Speaks supports global biomedical research into the diagnosis, causes, prevention and treatment of autism. In addition to their research grants, they also offer the Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowship and the Meixner Postdoctoral Fellowship in Translational Research.

Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing  

Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing from the American Cancer Society are awarded to graduate students pursuing doctoral study in the field of cancer nursing research, and preparing for careers as nurse scientists.

Graduate Women in Science Fellowships  

The GWIS National Fellowships Program offers fellowships to help increase knowledge in the natural sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women.

Grass Foundation  

The Grass Fellowship Program in neuroscience supports graduate students for study at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA for a summer research program.

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation  

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowshipprovides support for research to understand and reduce violence, aggression and dominance.

Institute of International Education  

The Institute of International Education offers the Fulbright Awards for Study/Research Abroad for all disciplines, all levels of graduate study before the PhD; foreign language proficiency is required.

Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust  

The purpose of the Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust is to recognize and assist students whose scholastic achievements reflect Professor Von Karman’s high standards. De Karman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States.

National Institutes of Health  

The National Institutes of Health (NSRA) offers individual fellowship funding opportunities.

National Science Foundation  

The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. Proposals must fall within the scope of any of the clusters in the Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) or the Behavioral Systems Cluster in the Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS). These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research for improvement beyond the already existing project. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to participate in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.

NIHCM Foundation  

The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation offers a variety of investigator-initiated research grants.

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund for Women  

P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund offers grants for women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada.

Schlumberger Foundation - Women Fellowships  

The Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future program supports outstanding women from developing countries in their pursuit of advanced graduate studies in engineering, science, and technology at leading universities worldwide.

Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformations (SMART) Program  

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research  

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program offers small grants under $1,000 to support research in any scientific area.

  • Deadlines: March 15 and October 15 annually
World Health Organization  

World Health Organization offers fellowships for students whose subjects of study are in the various areas of public health, teacher training in health sciences, postgraduate studies in medicine and surgery. Fellowships are awarded to attend formal courses or to study the services and practice in other countries.
