2019 Fellow, Yale Ciencia Academy for Career Development

The Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) for Career Development provides graduate students with opportunities for mentoring, networking, and skills development, and for making contributions to their communities through science outreach. The year-long program is led by the non-profit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico, in collaboration with Yale University, and is supported with funds from the NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences.  Laura Flores, a first-year student in the MSIA Patient-Oriented Research PhD program at UNMC, has been named as one of only 40 scholars selected as 2019 Yale Ciencia Academy Fellows. An MD/PhD Scholar, her notable awards to date include the Harvard Medical School Walls Do Talk Award (an award focused on the creation of an inclusive environment in medical school) and the UNMC Student Impact Award (a peer-nominated award for involvement on campus and in the community). Laura’s research interests focus on bone health after bariatric surgery and comparative effectiveness in general surgery. She is pursuing this work under the tutelage of Laura D. Bilek, P.T., PhD (Associate Professor, Physical Therapy Education; Associate Dean for Research, College of Allied Health Professions) and Dmitry Oleynikov, MD (Professor, Surgery; Chief, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery).
