NIH National Cancer Institute Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99 phase: 2018-2020)

The NCI Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition (F99/K00) Award supports outstanding PhD candidates to complete their dissertation research training (F99 phase) and transition in a timely manner to mentored, cancer-focused postdoctoral career development research positions (K00 phase). Saswati Karmakar has been awarded an F99/K00 award for her project entitled “Pancreatic cancer stem cells: PD2-mediated novel mechanistic link and metabolomic alterations.” During the F99 phase of the award, Saswati aims to define the role of Pancreatic Differentiation 2 (PD2) in pancreatic cancer stem cell (CSC) maintenance and CSC-mediated pancreatic cancer progression, with the goal of uncovering novel strategies to target pancreatic CSCs. During the K00 phase of the award, she will investigate the mechanisms that promote the acquisition of different metabolic programs by CSCs and differentiated tumor cells, the molecular biology behind and the contribution of metabolism to CSC-mediated drug resistance, and development of novel combinatorial therapeutics based on metabolic targeting to treat cancer. Saswati completed her dissertation research in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology under the direction of Dr. Surinder Batra, receiving the PhD degree in May 2020.
