Ph.D. in Cellular & Integrative Physiology

American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship (2017-2018)

The American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship program provides students with individualized, mentored research training to initiate careers in areas broadly related to cardiovascular function, disease and stroke, or to related basic science, bioengineering, biotechnology, and public health problems. Songita Choudhury, an M.D./Ph.D. Scholar at UNMC, was awarded a 2-year AHA Fellowship for her project entitled “Determining myocardial infarction size using extravascular ultrasound contrast.”  Her research is investigating a new methodology for noninvasive, rapid diagnosis of myocardial infarction utilizing a commercially available contrast agent and ultrasound. The long-term goal is to optimize this technique in a large animal model before bringing it into the clinic. Songita completed her dissertation research in Cellular & Integrative Physiology under the supervision of Thomas R. Porter, M.D., receiving the Ph.D. degree in May 2018. Songita will subsequently complete the final two years of her medical school training at UNMC.
