NHLBI Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (2021-2023)

Tyler Kambis was awarded a 2-year Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Predoctoral Fellowship (F31 NRSA) by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which enables promising predoctoral students to obtain individualized research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting dissertation research in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes.  His project, Targeting Metabolic Remodeling and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in the Diabetic Heart, focuses on the prevention of heart disease in individuals diagnosed with type 1 one diabetes. Tyler is a PhD Candidate in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Science – Molecular Genetics and Cellular Biology Doctoral Program and is pursuing his dissertation research under the mentorship of Dr. Paras K. Mishra, PhD, in the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology. He has won multiple national awards, including placing first in The Science Coalition’s Fund it Forward Student Video Challenge and second in Research!America’s Flash Talks competition. When he is away from the bench, Tyler serves as an Executive Board member for the non-profit Coalition Rx, a UNMC Legislative Team member, and Trainee Committee member for the American Physiological Society’s Cardiovascular Section.
