Telegraph The virus, which is mainly transmitted to humans by sandflies, is part of the same family of diseases that cause Rabies. At least 32 people, most of them children and teenagers, have died in the last month in the worst outbreak of Chandipura virus to hit India for over 20 years.
The poorly understood disease, which has only ever made the jump from insects to humans in India, has infected more than 80 people in the western state of Gujarat. Cases have also been reported in the neighbouring states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
The virus is part of the same family of diseases that cause Rabies. It is mainly transmitted to humans by sandflies, but both mosquitos and ticks have also been known to carry it.
