The virus, which scientists call H5N1, has spread like wildfire around the globe in recent years, surprising and horrifying scientists at every unpredictable turn. And while most people have fretted about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/podcast\/episode\/how-bird-flu-went-from-devastating-poultry-farms-to-infecting-dairy-herds\/\">the rising price of eggs, the possibility of viruses in our milk<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/podcast\/episode\/creating-bird-flu-vaccines-for-humans-at-a-biosecure-laboratory\/\">risk of a pandemic in humans<\/a>, countless wild animals are dying almost entirely out of our view\u2014so many that even the limited tallies scientists can make are incomprehensibly large. \u201cIt\u2019s easier to treat the numbers as numbers and not think too hard about what they really represent,\u201d says Stephanie Avery-Gomm, a conservation scientist at Environment and Climate Change Canada. \u201cBut if you do take that time to think about it, it\u2019s pretty sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"is TZGAvf\">is TZGAvf<\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientific American Bird flu fears have focused on the poultry and dairy industries and human health.
