But the latest surge is colliding with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/denver\/2025\/08\/01\/school-shopping-costs-denver-deloitte-survey\">back-to-school season<\/a>, when the virus could spread even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The surge comes after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/07\/07\/doctors-lawsuit-rfk-covid-vaccine-recommendation\">unilaterally changed<\/a>\u00a0federal COVID vaccine recommendations, causing confusion over who should get the shots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Driving the news:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nwss\/rv\/COVID19-national-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Wastewater data, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wastewater data<\/a>&nbsp;for the week ending Aug. 2 shows the Western U.S. leading the nation in COVID levels, with peaks in Colorado, Alaska, California, Nevada and Utah,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nwss\/rv\/COVID19-national-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"per the CDC, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">per the CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Colorado, COVID emergency department visits and positive tests are rising, state health department spokesperson Hope Shuler tells Axios Denver.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CDC data shows the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#maps_positivity-week\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"state's positivity rate, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state&#8217;s positivity rate<\/a>\u00a0sits at 8% \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/08\/13\/covid-19-symptoms-stratus-variant-states-highest-cases\">lower than the 12%<\/a>\u00a0seen in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana \u2014 but still trending upward.
