An over-the-counter nasal spray which has been used for years as a safe and effective treatment for seasonal allergies could potentially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/covid-vaccine-nb181-us-cases-rise-summer-razor-blade-throat-rcna220223\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"prevent Covid infections, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prevent Covid infections<\/a>, according to clinical trial results released Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"anchor-8d8810\">The antihistamine azelastine works as an antiviral against a range of respiratory infections, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1999-4915\/15\/12\/2300\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"influenza, RSV, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">influenza, RSV<\/a>&nbsp;and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/pharmacology\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2022.861295\/full\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"&nbsp;virus that causes Covid, opens in a new window\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;virus that causes Covid<\/a>, a growing number of studies have shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German scientists at Saarland University Hospital recruited 450 adults, mostly in their early 30s. The first group of 227 participants tested a puff of the nasal spray in each nostril, three times a day.
