Here\u2019s what you need to\u00a0know"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/theres-a-new-outbreak-of-ebola-in-africa-heres-what-you-need-to-know-264896\">The Conversation<\/a> The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/democratic-republic-of-congo\/news\/democratic-republic-congo-declares-ebola-virus-disease-outbreak-kasai-province\">has declared<\/a>&nbsp;a new Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province. It\u2019s caused by the most severe strain: Zaire Ebola virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This outbreak&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2025-DON580\">began<\/a>&nbsp;with a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital on August 20 and died five days later. Two health workers who treated her also became infected and died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By September 15, there were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/news\/dr-congo-begins-vaccinating-against-new-ebola-outbreak-n369671\">81 confirmed cases<\/a>&nbsp;and 28 deaths, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2025-DON580\">four health workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DRC has had 15 prior Ebola epidemics, with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-the-drc-ebola-outbreak-was-declared-a-global-emergency-and-why-it-matters-121991\">largest in 2019<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ebola\/outbreaks\/index.html\">most recent<\/a>&nbsp;in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But genetic analysis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/virological.org\/t\/the-16th-ebola-virus-disease-outbreak-in-bulape-health-zone-kasai-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-a-new-spillover-event-from-an-unknown-reservoir-host\/1003\">shows<\/a>&nbsp;the outbreak likely began after a spillover from an animal to a human, rather than a continuation of earlier outbreaks.<\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"rv cmp R sF M U WQiKB\"><!-- rv cmp R sF M U WQiKB --><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Conversation The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)&nbsp;has declared&nbsp;a new Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province.
