Three&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\">California<\/a>&nbsp;residents have been infected with clade I&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/monkeypox\">mpox<\/a>, a more severe strain of the virus formerly known as monkeypox \u2013 marking the first time this type of mpox has spread within the US, health officials said on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unrelated cases, identified in Long Beach and Los Angeles county, involve patients who had not recently traveled abroad. All three were hospitalized and are now recovering, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/OPA\/Pages\/NR25-015.aspx\">California department of public health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mpox is a viral infection that often begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills and muscle aches.
