The death toll in Ethiopia\u2019s first outbreak of the deadly Marburg haemorrhagic fever has risen to five, with 10 cases confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another three dead patients are also suspected to have died from the Ebola-like killer, but full lab tests have yet to confirm the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health experts have rushed to the outbreak site in southern Ethiopia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/ethiopia-declares-its-first-marburg-outbreak\/\">since the first cases were confirmed earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists have warned that the outbreak\u2019s proximity to borders with Kenya and South Sudan means that, if not contained, it could spread rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marburg is caused by a filovirus carried by fruit bats and can jump to people exposed to the flying mammals in caves or mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infection is then transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected patients.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Telegraph Experts warn that the outbreak\u2019s proximity to borders with Kenya and South Sudan means that \u2013 if not contained \u2013 it could spread rapidly.
