What is this virus and how concerned about it should we be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happened?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In early November, a resident of Grays Harbor, a county on the south-west Pacific coast of Washington state about 100 miles from Seattle, became severely unwell with flu-like symptoms including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2025\/11\/21\/bird-flu-patient-dies-marking-second-us-fatality-2025\/\">high fever, respiratory distress and confusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were admitted to hospital, and on November 14&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doh.wa.gov\/newsroom\/h5n5-avian-influenza-confirmed-grays-harbor-county-resident\">officials confirmed<\/a>&nbsp;that tests showed infection with an H5N5 avian influenza virus. The patient, an older adult with underlying conditions, was treated in hospital, but sadly they&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doh.wa.gov\/newsroom\/grays-harbor-county-resident-dies-complications-avian-influenza\">died on November 21<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the first reported human infection with an H5N5 influenza virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is H5N5 influenza virus?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>H5N5 influenza viruses are a type of avian influenza (bird flu) \u2013 an influenza A virus that infects birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird flu viruses are classified as either \u201chigh pathogenicity\u201d or \u201clow pathogenicity\u201d based on the severity of symptoms they cause in poultry. (Their severity also varies in other bird species.)
