Japan and the U.K. are currently grappling with an unexpectedly early uptick in severe flu cases. A mutated strain known to cause severe disease may be behind some of the unusual activity. These warning signals, combined with interruptions in U.S. surveillance data and declining vaccination rates, have scientists worried. \u201cInfluenza is no joke,\u201d says Shaun Truelove, an infectious-disease epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University. \u201cRight now it\u2019s time for everybody to get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"flu-trends-to-date\"><strong>Flu Trends to Date<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-the-government-shutdown-is-impacting-science-and-research\/\">government shutdown<\/a>&nbsp;interrupted national flu data reporting last month, leaving scientists in the dark.
