In a new list of fungal \u201cpriority pathogens,\u201d the World Health Organization identifies 19 of these often-overlooked microbes that pose the greatest threat to human health. The\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240060241\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>, released today (October 25), highlights the fact that \u201cfungal infections are growing, and are ever more resistant to treatments, becoming a public health concern worldwide,\u201d says Hanan Balkhy, the WHO Assistant Director-General for antimicrobial resistance, in a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/25-10-2022-who-releases-first-ever-list-of-health-threatening-fungi\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>. The organization previously compiled similar lists for\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/activities\/prioritizing-diseases-for-research-and-development-in-emergency-contexts\" target=\"_blank\">viruses<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/WHO-EMP-IAU-2017.12\" target=\"_blank\">bacteria<\/a>. More than 150 million severe fungal infections are\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7278517\/pdf\/mic-07-143.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0to occur annually, resulting in approximately 1.7 million deaths. But those numbers are based on incomplete data, which is why the report \u201caims to focus and drive further research and policy interventions to strengthen the global response to fungal infections and antifungal resistance.\u201d For instance, fungal infections currently receive less than 1.5 percent of all infectious disease research funding, the authors note. The University of Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute\u2019s Justin Beardsley, who led a group commissioned by the WHO that aided in compiling the report, tells\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2022\/oct\/25\/fungal-disease-spiked-during-covid-pandemic-and-pathogens-spreading-due-to-climate-crisis-who-says\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that funding levels are unconscionably low considering the \u201chuge burden of disease\u201d of fungal infections. \u201cThey\u2019re causing as many deaths as tuberculosis, and more than malaria.\u201d Those diseases respectively caused approximately\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/tuberculosis\" target=\"_blank\">1.5 million<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/malaria\" target=\"_blank\">627,000<\/a>\u00a0deaths in 2020, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(The Scientist) The World Health Organization\u2019s first ever fungal priority pathogens list highlights the growing threat of fungal diseases and antifungal resistance.
