On Thursday, the required\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/us-leave-world-health-organization-jan-22-2026-says-un-2025-01-23\/\">one-year notice<\/a>\u00a0period will pass since the United States declared\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/07\/politics\/us-withdrawing-world-health-organization\/index.html\">its intention<\/a>\u00a0to leave the World Health Organization (WHO), although other member states\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthpolicy-watch.news\/member-states-to-discuss-us-withdrawal-from-who-as-failure-to-pay-fees-violates-agreement\/\">continue to discuss<\/a>\u00a0the U.S. exit given that the country has yet to pay its outstanding assessed dues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/withdrawing-the-united-states-from-the-worldhealth-organization\/\">announced the departure<\/a>&nbsp;on the first day of his second tenure, I hoped that a quick deal could be reached. I was wrong. Last May I&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/05\/opinion\/health-who-membership-trump.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<em>New York Times<\/em>, &#8220;The golden age of global health as led by the United States is over. The rest of the world must now focus on building a healthier world that is less dependent on U.S. aid\u2014and less susceptible to U.S. influence and disruption.
