{"id":11349,"date":"2026-01-28T16:46:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/?p=11349"},"modified":"2026-01-28T16:46:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:46:15","slug":"uk-loses-measles-elimination-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2026\/01\/28\/uk-loses-measles-elimination-status\/","title":{"rendered":"UK loses measles elimination status"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2026\/jan\/26\/who-drops-uk-status-measles-free-rise-in-deaths-fall-in-jab-uptake\">Guardian<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK has lost its status as a measles-free country after a rise in deaths from the disease and fall in the proportion of children having the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/mmr\">MMR<\/a>&nbsp;jab in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organization said it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/news-room\/events\/item\/2025\/09\/15\/default-calendar\/14th-meeting-of-the-european-regional-verification-commission-for-measles-and-rubella-elimination-(rvc)\">no longer classified Britain<\/a>&nbsp;as having eliminated measles because the disease had become re-established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK is one of six countries in Europe and central Asia that the WHO says is no longer measles-free, the others being Spain, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO had adjudged the UK to have eliminated the disease between 2021 and 2023, but recent increases in the number of recorded cases \u2013 there were 3,681 in 2024 \u2013 and rises in the number of outbreaks and deaths has led to a rethink.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: none;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" title=\"VWmPCeZOc zw Q QndsV l bnoX w  \">VWmPCeZOc zw Q QndsV l bnoX w  <\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guardian The UK has lost its status as a measles-free country after a rise in deaths from the disease and fall in the proportion of children having the&nbsp;MMR&nbsp;jab in recent years.
